How to find out who owns a company in Illinois
Illinois makes LLCs declare how they’re managed and name the people doing it — which puts a decision-maker on the record from day one.
Short answer: Search the entity on the Illinois Secretary of State’s business database. Articles of organization state whether the LLC is member-managed or manager-managed and name those managers or managing members.
The management structure is the useful part
Illinois requires an LLC to declare its structure. Member-managed means the names you see are the owners running it. Manager-managed means the named manager might be an employee, a partner or an outside firm. Getting this right matters before you address someone as the owner.
How to search
- Open the Department of Business Services corporation and LLC search.
- Search by file number or entity name.
- Open the record for the registered agent, registered office and management detail.
- Check the annual report for the current version — addresses drift.
