How to find out who owns a company in North Carolina
North Carolina publishes both the organizer and the company officials, and the annual report keeps them current. It’s one of the better states in the Southeast.
Short answer: Search the entity on the Secretary of State’s business registration site. The articles of organization name the organizer, and the annual report lists company officials with their titles and addresses.
The annual report is the better document
The organizer signed the company into existence and may have no ongoing role. Company officials on the annual report are the people actually running it, listed with titles like member, manager or president. When the two disagree, the annual report wins.
How to search
- Open the Secretary of State business registration search.
- Search by company name, or use the registered agent search to work backwards from a person.
- Open the record and check the filing history.
- Open the most recent annual report for current officials and the principal office.
Charlotte and the Triangle behave differently
If you’re building a territory rather than researching one company, the principal office address is the field that matters. Charlotte’s banking and services economy and the Triangle’s research and tech cluster produce very different formation mixes, and treating North Carolina as one market usually underperforms.
When only a Raleigh agent appears
Bulk filings from commercial agent services carry the agent’s registered office. If you see the same Raleigh address repeatedly, that’s what you’ve found. Fall back to the assumed business name filing at county level, or the annual report once the company has filed one.
