How to find out who owns a company in Virginia
Virginia specifies agent qualifications, but eligible commercial business entities may also serve.
Short answer: Search the Clerk’s Information System for the principal office, agent and filing history. Virginia allows qualified resident individuals and certain authorized corporations, LLCs and registered LLPs to act as agents. An agent is not necessarily an owner or insider.
The agent restriction is the key
Virginia’s eligible agents include certain connected resident individuals, Virginia lawyers, and authorized business entities. A commercial provider can therefore be eligible. Use the qualification field to understand the legal role, not to infer ownership or decision-making authority.
How to search
- Open the Clerk’s Information System.
- Search by entity name or SCC ID.
- Open the record for the agent, the agent’s qualification, and the principal office.
- Check filing history for amendments and the annual registration.
Read the qualification field
Where available, the qualification describes why the agent is eligible. It can identify a permitted individual role or an authorized business entity; it does not establish beneficial ownership.
Northern Virginia is a separate market
Fairfax, Arlington and Loudoun behave commercially as part of the DC metro rather than the rest of Virginia. If you sell into government contracting or professional services, that’s where the formation volume concentrates.
