How to find out who owns a company in Kentucky
Kentucky publishes the actual filed documents at no charge, which is rarer than it should be.
Short answer: Search the entity on the Secretary of State’s business search. Kentucky publishes full images of filed documents free, and the annual report — due 30 June for every entity — names the current officers, members or managers.
Free document images change what’s possible
Most states show you a summary and charge for the document. Kentucky lets you open the original articles of organization, amendments and annual reports at no cost. That matters because summaries drop detail: signatures, addresses and the exact wording of who holds what role all live in the document itself.
How to search
- Open the Kentucky business search.
- Search by organisation name, organisation number or individual name.
- Open the record and go to the filings list.
- Open the most recent annual report, then the original articles.
One deadline for everyone
Kentucky annual reports are all due 30 June regardless of when the entity formed. That’s unusual — most states use the formation anniversary — and it means the whole register corrects itself at the same time each year. Data pulled in July is materially fresher than data pulled in May.
Searching by person
Kentucky supports individual-name search, so once you have one name you can find every Kentucky entity attached to it. Useful for working out whether you’re dealing with a first venture or a serial operator.
