How to find out who owns a company in Colorado
Colorado’s search is free, fast and complete. The catch is that cheap filing fees mean a lot of what you’ll find never traded at all.
Short answer: Search the entity on the Colorado Secretary of State’s business database. Every filing and every document image is free to view, and the articles name the person who formed the entity along with the registered agent.
One of the most open registries in the country
Colorado charges nothing to search and nothing to view document images. Compared with Texas, where SOSDirect meters every lookup, it’s a materially better public system, and it means you can read the actual filed articles rather than a summary.
How to search
- Open the Colorado business database search.
- Search by entity name or ID.
- Open the summary, then “Filing history and documents”.
- Open the articles of organization for the person forming the entity and the registered agent.
The cheap-filing problem
Colorado’s filing fee is among the lowest in the country and everything is online, which produces formation volume well above what the population would suggest. A meaningful share of those entities are speculative — name reservations, ideas that never launched, holding vehicles.
So a Colorado record existing tells you less than the same record would in an expensive state. Check whether there’s a periodic report on file, whether the address is residential or commercial, and whether a trade name is registered. Those are the signals that separate a real business from a placeholder.
If you need this at scale
A registered agent receives legal documents for the company. Hiring a commercial agent does not establish that the company is a shell, lacks an operating address, or has no useful contacts. Check the principal or mailing address and named officials separately; an agent address alone does not locate the operating business.
