How to find out who owns a company in Utah

Utah publishes managers and members openly, and renews every entity annually. The catch is finding the right department in the first place.

Short answer: Search the entity through the Division of Corporations and Commercial Code, part of the Department of Commerce — not the Secretary of State. Utah publishes managers and members on the record, and annual renewal keeps it current.

Utah has no Secretary of State for this

Utah is one of a handful of states where corporate filings don’t sit with a Secretary of State at all. They’re handled by the Division of Corporations and Commercial Code within the Department of Commerce, which is why the obvious search sends people in circles.

How to search

  1. Open the Division of Corporations business search.
  2. Search by business name or entity number.
  3. Open the record for registered agent, principal address and status.
  4. Read the principals section — Utah lists managers, members, officers and directors by role.

The principals list is the useful bit

Utah doesn’t just give you names, it gives you roles. Knowing whether someone is a manager, a member or a director tells you whether you’re calling an owner or an appointee, which most states leave you to infer.

Silicon Slopes distorts the volume

Utah produces formation volume far above what its population suggests, concentrated along the Wasatch Front from Ogden through Salt Lake to Provo. If you’re building a territory, that corridor is effectively the whole state, and it skews heavily toward tech and professional services.
