How to find out who owns a company in Ohio
Ohio doesn’t make most LLCs file an annual report, which means the original filing is often the only thing the state will ever hold.
Short answer: Search the entity on the Ohio Secretary of State’s business search. Articles of organization name the statutory agent, and corporations name incorporators — but Ohio requires no annual report from most LLCs, so the record rarely gets updated after formation.
Why Ohio records go stale
Ohio does not require a routine annual report from most LLCs. That does not remove the obligation to maintain a statutory agent or make required change filings. Read filing history and amendments rather than assuming the original address can never change.
That has two consequences. Old records are less trustworthy than they look, and new records are disproportionately valuable, because a filing from last week is the freshest information the state will ever publish about that company.
How to search
- Open the Ohio Secretary of State business search.
- Search by business name or charter number.
- Open the record and view the filed documents — images are free.
- Read the original articles for the statutory agent and, on corporations, the incorporators.
What to do when the filing names nobody useful
Ohio LLC filings do not provide a complete member or manager list. Search Ohio Secretary of State trade-name and fictitious-name registrations, rather than assuming those registrations are county filings. Professional licensing and other relevant public records may provide additional evidence.
Three metros, three markets
Ohio is unusual in splitting fairly evenly between Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati rather than concentrating in one city. If you’re building a territory, the principal address is the field to filter on, and it’s realistic for one person to work all three.
If you need this at scale
Because Ohio records don’t self-correct, catching the entity while the filing is new matters more here than almost anywhere. See Ohio formation data for the daily feed.
