How to find out who owns a company in Ohio
Ohio doesn’t make most LLCs file an annual report, which means the original filing is often the only thing the state will ever hold.
Short answer: Search the entity on the Ohio Secretary of State’s business search. Articles of organization name the statutory agent, and corporations name incorporators — but Ohio requires no annual report from most LLCs, so the record rarely gets updated after formation.
Why Ohio records go stale
Most states force a yearly correction through an annual report. Ohio doesn’t for LLCs. An entity formed in 2019 can still show its 2019 statutory agent and address today, with no obligation to have updated anything.
That has two consequences. Old records are less trustworthy than they look, and new records are disproportionately valuable, because a filing from last week is the freshest information the state will ever publish about that company.

- Open the Ohio Secretary of State business search.
- Search by business name or charter number.
- Open the record and view the filed documents — images are free.
- Read the original articles for the statutory agent and, on corporations, the incorporators.
What to do when the filing names nobody useful
Ohio LLCs aren’t required to name members or managers. If the only name is a statutory agent service in Columbus, the state has nothing more to give you. Try the county fictitious name or trade name registration, professional licensing boards, or the Ohio Business Gateway registration if the company has employees.
Three metros, three markets
Ohio is unusual in splitting fairly evenly between Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati rather than concentrating in one city. If you’re building a territory, the principal address is the field to filter on, and it’s realistic for one person to work all three.
